Description:

RJA was the lead consultant for the streetscape masterplanning to improve this State Highway from Grove Way in Hayward to the Bayfair Mall in San Leandro. The plan centered around enhancing the walkability of the street through the use of landscaping, bulbouts at intersections, transit stops and sidewalk pavers, over this two-mile stretch of major arterial. The work also included widening of sidewalks, undergrounding of overhead utilities, modification of traffic signals and construction of a raised landscaped median island. The surveying work for this 2-mile project included aerial controls, supplemental topographic surveys, and setting controls for the right-of-way boundaries.

The project’s goal was to stimulate the economic vitality of this transit corridor. With the undergrounding of utilities, as well as numerous landscape/streetscape elements the improvements effectively transformed the area into a safer, pedestrian-friendly arterial.
